In reply, the landfill company and the Environment Agency conducted environmental monitoring of the landfill gas and the ambient air from February 2002 to June 2002. Organosulphur compounds are the main contributors of the unpleasant rotten-egg odours released from landfill sites. However, these are very difficult to sample and analyse accurately as they are highly reactive and hence very expensive to monitor. The best method of determination unfortunately is the human nose. Landfill gases may migrate from the landfill site either above or below ground and therefore, people may be exposed to landfill gas in their neighbouring communities.
