GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- A Brazilian berry popular in health food contains antioxidants that destroyed cultured human cancer cells in a recent University of Florida study, one of the first to investigate the fruit's purported benefits. Published today in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, the study showed extracts from acai ah-SAH'-ee ; berries triggered a self-destruct response in up to percent of leukemia cells tested, said Stephen Talcott, an assistant professor with UF's Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. "Acai berries are already considered one of the richest fruit sources of antioxidants, " Talcott said. "This study was an important step toward learning what people may gain from using beverages, dietary supplements or other products made with the berries." He cautioned that the study, funded by UF sources, was not intended to show whether compounds found in acai berries could prevent leukemia in people. "This was only a cell-culture model and we don't want to give anyone false hope, " Talcott said. "We are encouraged by the findings, however. Compounds that show good activity against cancer cells in a model system are most likely to have beneficial effects in our bodies." Other fruits, including grapes, guavas and mangoes, contain antioxidants shown to kill cancer cells in similar studies, he said. Experts are uncertain how much effect antioxidants have on cancer cells in the human body, because factors such as nutrient absorption, metabolism and the influence of other biochemical processes may influence the antioxidants' chemical activity. Another UF study, slated to conclude in 2006, will investigate the effects of acai's antioxidants on healthy human subjects, Talcott said. The study will determine how well the compounds are absorbed into the blood, and how they may affect blood pressure, cholesterol levels and related health indicators. So far, only fundamental research has been done on acai berries, which contain at least 50 to 75 as-yet unidentified compounds. "One reason so little is known about acai berries is that they're perishable and are traditionally used immediately after picking, " he said. "Products made with processed acai berries have only been available for about five years, so researchers in many parts of the world have had little or no opportunity to study them." Talcott said UF is one of the first institutions outside Brazil with personnel studying acai berries. It is difficult to estimate the numbers of people with opiate dependence across the world and the percentage of those who are in treatment. In some countries, in particular in Western Europe and the US and Australia, monitoring systems provide us with estimates and these figures are not always comparable and have to be interpreted with caution. Across the world, substitution treatment has a long and varied history in different countries and continents, where changes in medical opinion and legislation have led to developments and changes in prescribing practices. In 1999, it was estimated that over half a million people worldwide were in maintenance treatment, predominantly with methadone approximately 300.000 in Europe, 200.000 in the United States and 20.000 in Australia ; Farrell, et al, 1999, Parrino, 1999 ; . There are no exact numbers of persons in buprenorphine treatment worldwide, but based on the available information, it is estimated that at least 200.000 people receive buprenorphine under the trade name Subutex. Buprenorphine is also manufactured by other companies, e.g. by Rusan in India, but estimates of the use of their products in this indication are not available. There are many countries in the world where different forms of drug treatment are provided. Although the bulk of substitution treatment to date is still administered in Europe, North America and Australia, there is also a trend towards the provision of substitution treatment in Central and Eastern Europe and in Southeast Asia and other parts of Asia.

The results of the present study support the potential of DAT imaging using SPECT as a differential diagnostic tool to distinguish between PD and APDs such as PSP and MSA-P when voxelwise analysis is applied. Using striatal [123I] -CIT V3 values, we did not observe any overlap between controls and the patients with parkinsonian disorders. Using a cutoff midbrain [123I] -CIT V3 value of 2.3, we were able to correctly classify 91.3% of patients with APD and PD 42 of all 46 patients with parkinsonism ; . Similar to previous neuroimaging studies, 23, 27, 48-51 we were not able to differentiate between PSP and MSA-P; however, our data suggest that quantification of midbrain DAT signal may enhance the diagnostic yield of [123I] -CIT SPECT in patients with parkinsonism. Difference between buprenorphine and methadone
In this study, we showed that the combination of IT morphine and systemic buprenorphine produces a profound and prolonged antinociceptive effect. This was achieved by combining the doses that produce a moderate antinociceptive effect when administered separately. The analysis of interaction shows that the effect observed in the present study was the result of the supraadditive mode of interaction between both drugs. Simultaneous injections of IT and intraventricular morphine resulted in a supraadditive antinociceptive effect 1, 2 ; . We propose that a similar interaction also occurred in our study after IT-II' administration. These studies suggest that it is possible to obtain potent analgesic effects with relatively small concentrations of opioids. Combinations that permit a decrease of the opioids' concentration at the supraspinal level might minimize the incidence of respiratory depression, which can be evoked by a direct action at supraspinal sites 14-16 ; . P-Agonist activity at the supraspinal level can interact in a supraadditive manner with spinally administered morphine 2 ; . Because buprenorphine is an agonist of p-opioid receptors, the supraadditive interaction of this drug with spinal morphine could have been predicted. However, because of the partial agonist activity of buprenorphine at p-opioid receptors, the systemic use of this drug may further reduce the likelihood of respiratory depression. E2 is the most potent agonist at ERs, and in the present study, its biological effects on cholesterol absorption via the intestinal Er pathway are observed in exogenously E2-treated mice. In the previous studies 4 ; , there is a remarkably negative correlation between percent cholesterol absorption and expression levels of the jejunal and ileal Abcg5 and Abcg8 in chow-fed mice. However, it is interesting to find in the current study that under conditions of high levels of estrogen, increased expression levels of Abcg5 and Abcg8 are associated with an increase in the efficiency of intestinal cholesterol absorption. A possible reason is that Er functions as a transcriptional regulator to stimulate gene expression of Abcg5 and Abcg8 in the intestine. In addition, our results do not exclude the possibility that E2 per se may produce a specific enhancing effect on the expression of the genes for these sterol efflux transporters. Furthermore, we found that high doses of E2 upregulate expression levels of Npc1l1, which is associated with augmented intestinal cholesterol absorption. Therefore, our results support the concept that the efficiency of cholesterol absorption could be determined by the net effect between influx and efflux of intraluminal cholesterol molecules crossing the brush border of the enterocyte 4, 16 ; . We also observed that these biological effects of E2 are completely blocked by the antiestrogenic ICI 182, 780, suggesting that this response is most likely a direct effect of Er and the Abcg5, Abcg8, and Npc1l1 genes may be a potential target gene of Er. Overall, these studies suggest a possible "estrogen-Er-sterol transporters" pathway regulating the efficiency of intestinal cholesterol absorption and camptosar.

The attractions of Cambodia are many--the magic of Angkor Wat, the rare and recently rediscovered birds that can still be found in many parts of the country, and the marvelous rural landscapes that evoke childhood memories of an imagined exotic Southeast Asia. Only a few years ago the country was off-limits, and these birds remained unknown to the outside world; now we were amongst the first birding groups to marvel at the sight of the almost mythical Giant Ibis and White-shouldered Ibis, among many others. One of the attractions for a birder visiting Cambodia is the chance to observe in the wild some of the rarest birds in the world. The really special bird of this trip is the Giant Ibis, which survives in good numbers in the hidden-away corner of Preah Vihear Province. But other treats like Black-headed Woodpecker, Small Buttonquail, White-shouldered Ibis, and Pale-capped Pigeon are very enticing! The remarkable Tonle Sap Lake and its surroundings support large breeding populations of Greater Adjutant, Sarus Crane, Milky Stork, and Bengal Florican--birds that are approaching extinction elsewhere in Asia. This small country supports a remarkable 24 threatened bird species--a testament to the extent and quality of the forests, grasslands, and wetlands. Long may it remain so! Our journey started in Bangkok, with a morning visit to the saltpans of Khok Kam. Here we met up with Mr. Tee, a local man working hard to protect the habitat of the many waders and waterbirds that find a haven here. A very enjoyable morning of wader-watching was followed by a brief flight to Siem Reap in Cambodia's west. The next morning we explored the simply amazing ruins of the ancient city of Angkor, set in forest featuring remarkably large trees and wonderful congregations of birds. Large and noisy flocks of parakeets vied for our attention with a host of forest birds and wonderful views of the temples. Angkor is one of the great archaeological sites of Southeast Asia, along with Pagan, Borobodur, and Ayuthaya. This magnificent reminder of an empire that shaped the entire region is now a major attraction for visitors to Cambodia. The Khmer Empire flourished for three centuries from 800 to 1100 AD, ruling over most of Burma, Laos, central Vietnam, and the Malay Peninsula. Ang Trapeang Thmor is an extensive area of wetlands centered around a thousand-year-old reservoir. After a rough drive on the worst road in Cambodia, we found the place absolutely teeming with birds! What a treat to watch large flocks of Comb Ducks grazing on the swamps, and congregations of the rapidly declining Sharpii race of Sarus Crane walking across the grasses. This sort of experience in Southeast Asia is, sadly, now unique to Cambodia. The highlight of our tour was undoubtedly our journey into the remote parts of northern Cambodia for our two-night stay in the tiny and rustic village of Tmatboey. Our travels on dirt roads into the interior were punctuated with frequent stops for many exciting birds! The very attractive Rufous-winged Buzzard is still delightfully common in the dry dipterocarp forests of this area. In fact, these are easily the best and most extensive dry dipterocarp forests surviving in Asia; this explains the presence of many of these species that are otherwise very difficult to find or absent elsewhere in the entire region. Other moments of excitement included a large flock of Crested Treeswifts drinking from a small dam, a low-flying and simply lovely Black Baza, pocket-sized Collared Falconets, and countless numbers of the common, but nevertheless gorgeous Indian Roller. On arrival in Tmatboey we still had a bit of time for some late afternoon birding and, much to our delight, we were soon marveling at superb scope views of the critically endangered and very handsome White-shouldered Ibis and capecitabine.
