Prevention is important because there is no cure for colorectal cancer when complete surgical resection cannot be performed. NSAIDs have attracted substantial interest as chemopreventive agents in colon cancer and have been a potent inhibitory effect on the growth of colorectal cancer both in animal studies and in human studies [1] and references therein ; . However, the gastrointestinal and renal side-effects associated with the long-term use of most classical NSAIDs has limited their usefulness for the purpose of cancer chemoprevention [2-4]. Hence interest has focused on related compounds with fewer side effects such as selective COX-2 inhibitors or mesalazine [5]. Mesalazine 5-aminosalicylic acid 5-ASA , for which there is long-term clinical experience in the treatment of patients with inflammatory bowel disease, is well tolerated, has limited systemic side effects, and has no gastrointestinal toxicity [6, 7].
