Membrane 1, 2 ; . Due to the enormous complexity of this enzyme, little is known about the pathway of the electron s ; and the mechanism of proton pumping. There is a wide variety of inhibitors of mitochondrial complex I 3 ; . Except rhein 4 ; and diphenyleneiodonium 5 ; which inhibit electron input into the enzyme, all inhibitors act at or close to the ubiquinone reduction site i.e. so-called "rotenone site" ; 3 ; . Among the inhibitors, positively charged neurotoxic N-methylphenylpyridinium MPP ; and its analogues exhibit unique inhibitory action 6 ; , although their inhibitory potencies are much poorer than those of classical potent inhibitors like piericidin A and rotenone. A series of studies on the inhibition mechanism of MPP analogues by Singer and colleagues 6 9 ; have suggested that MPP analogues are bound at two sites, one being accessible to the relatively hydrophilic inhibitors termed the "hydrophilic site" ; and one shielded by a hydrophobic barrier on the enzyme the "hydrophobic site" ; , and that occupation of both sites is required for complete inhibition. This notion is supported by the existence of two EPR-detectable species of complex I-associated ubisemiquinones 10 ; and by circumstantial evidence derived from studies on other types of complex I inhibitors 1114 ; . Thus MPP analogues are useful probes with which to characterize the structural and mechanistic features of the ubiquinone reduction site of complex I. However, MPP analogues synthesized to date have certain limitations when they are used as a complex I inhibitor. For instance, the inhibition by MPP analogues requires very high concentrations approximate mM order ; compared with classical inhibitors, and there has been no specific inhibitor that acts selectively at one of the two proposed binding sites. In particular, the latter point seems to be unusual since if indeed there are two distinct binding sites, it is unlikely that their structural properties are completely identical. In addition, considering that proton pumping machinery would be close to the ubiquinone binding site which is a part of the membrane-embedded segment of the enzyme 1517 ; , it remained to be defined whether the two MPP inevitably ubiquinone ; binding sites contribute to proton pumping. To overcome these problems and advance the usefulness of MPP analogues, potent and specific inhibitors acting selectively at one of the two MPP binding sites are earnestly required. In the present study, we synthesized a wide variety of Nmethylpyridinium and quinolinium cationic inhibitors Fig. 1 ; to develop such a candidate. In searching through our compound sets, we found some very potent and unique inhibitors. Analysis of the inhibition behaviors of these compounds provided strong support for the existence of the two ubiquinone binding sites in complex I and revealed that both sites contribute to redox-driven proton pumping. The Madaba Plains Borderlands Survey Project, 1996: `Iraq el-Amir and the Dhiban Plateau Fig. 19 ; The first season of the Madaba Plains Borderlands Survey Project took place in the region of `Iraq el-Amir and the Dhiban plateau between July 20 and September 10, 1996. The objectives of this project were: 1 ; to locate ancient sites in the Dhiban plateau and within a 5 km radius of `Iraq el-Amir; 2 ; to understand the occupational history and settlement pattern of the Madaba Plains in a wider geographical context; and 3 ; to fill the geographical gap between the Dhiban Plateau Survey and the Madaba Plains Hinterlands Survey Project. Little systematic research has ever been carried out in the given areas. Thus, the Madaba Plains Borderlands Survey Project holds great potential for advancing our knowledge of the occupational history and settlement patterns in ancient Jordan. `Iraq el-Amir and the Wadi es-Seer `Iraq el-Amir is situated on the west bank of the Wadi es-Seer, about 17 km west of Amman and 29 km east of Jericho. The immediate vicinity of `Iraq elAmir includes a megalithic Hellenistic monumental building, scattered ancient structures, and a large number of man-made and natural caves on a cliff. In 1996, two different field strategies were implemented within a 5 km radius of `Iraq el-Amir. They were random square survey and site survey. The 5 km radius of `Iraq el-Amir contains 1962 squares of 200 m. Each of these squares was assigned a sequence number, and 50 squares were randomly selected for investigation. The site survey was designed specifically to search for new archaeological sites in the survey area. According to the random square survey, Early Bronze EB ; pottery sherds came from four squares. Middle Bronze MB ; pottery was found only in one.

Viable oligodendrocytes and so of their ability to repair their own myelin sheaths.130 If this hypothesis is correct, it follows that high doses of natural methyl acceptors, such as thiamin vitamin B1 ; , riboflavin vitamin B2 ; , niacin vitamin B3 ; , and ubiquinone coenzyme Q10 ; , should slow or even stop multiple sclerosis progression by greatly reducing the breakdown of dopamine.131 If this is the case, then the vitamin B1 injections promoted by Mount132 and Klenner133 must ultimately improve the myelin repair capabilities of multiple sclerosis patients, so preventing exacerbations. Interestingly, it has been shown recently that high doses of coenzyme Q10 can play a similar role in Parkinson's disease patients.134 In summary, the diets that appear to work the best for those who suffer from multiple sclerosis are anti-inflammatory, rich in antioxidants such as selenium and vitamins C and E ; , having a low omega-6 omega-3 ratio, depressed glycemic index, and a high capability to quench free radicals. In addition, such diets do not include dairy products or grains containing gluten, substances that may act as chronic inflammatory "triggers."135 As multiple sclerosis patients tend to be deficient in total triiodothyronine, 136 it is hardly surprising that they benefit from desiccated thyroid.137 Thyroid hormones also play a key role in controlling body temperature.138 As a result, thyroid hormone deficiency may account for Uhthoff's Phenomenon, the worsening of multiple sclerosis symptoms as temperature rises.139 and valdecoxib.

Strain 1762-AUS-E was presumptively identified as a Legionella species by its morphologic and growth characteristics. This identification was confirmed by the presence of branched-chain cellular fatty acids. The pattern of n-C16: 1 and i-C14h as the most abundant nonhydroxy and monohydroxy fatty acids, respectively, is shared by L. feeleii and L. moravica. The nonhydroxy and monohydroxy fatty acid profiles of these two species and that of L. adelaidensis can be readily distinguished 13, 15, 20 ; . The ubiquinone profile, dominated by Qil, is unlike any of the profiles reported for 23 Legionella species by Lambert and Moss 11 ; and appears to represent a new ubiquinone group. DNA hybridization studies confirmed that strain 1762-AUS-E is a new Legionella species, with little relatedness to previously described species. There were no serologic cross-reactions observed with antiserum produced against L. adelaidensis and the other 31 Legionella species. Cross-reaction between L. adelaidensis and L. hackeliae serogroup 1 and L. dumoffii antiserum were not observed when appropriately absorbed.
