In all animals, 3 histologic sections were made of the anterior and posterior walls of both ventricles and the septum, the foci of myocarditis were counted, graded 12 to 2 according to their size and the sum divided by the total area of the sections in square centimeters. The resulting "myocarditis index" averaged 4.97 in animals whose electrocardiogram was normalized by ergotamine and 8.81 in those where it remained abnormal. This shows that while the degree of normalization after ergotamine is in general greater when myocarditis is less pronounced, complete normalization may occur in the presence of extensive myocarditis.
